1. “It’s Illegal for Civilians to Buy Body Armor”

False. In almost every U.S. state, it is legal to buy and wear body armor—no permit required—as long as you’re not a convicted felon.

You don’t need to be military or law enforcement. If you want to protect yourself, you can.

2. “Bulletproof Clothing Is Bulky and Obvious”

Not anymore. Modern materials like UHMWPE allow for ultra-thin panels—less than 0.2 inches thick. Civilian gear looks and feels like normal clothing. You’d never know it’s armored.

3. “Kevlar Is the Best Material”

It was. Now it’s not. Kevlar breaks down with moisture, UV, and time. Civilian uses next-generation materials like UHMWPE that are lighter, last longer, and don’t degrade in the rain.

4. “Only Tactical Gear Can Save You”

Wrong. Most civilian threats happen in daily life. Tactical gear might be overkill—and a dead giveaway. Concealable protection actually works in public.

5. “Bulletproof Vests Stop Everything”

Not true. NIJ IIIA stops handgun rounds. It won’t stop rifle fire or knives (unless specifically tailored to be stab proof). Always check the rating—and know what you’re buying.
