How Long Does Body Armor Last Before It Needs Replacement?

Body armor is built to protect lives. Whether you're law enforcement, military, a security professional—or simply a civilian who values personal protection—understanding how long your armor remains effective is critical.
So how long does body armor last before it needs to be replaced?

The General Rule: 5 Years for Soft Armor
Most manufacturers—and the National Institute of Justice (NIJ), the U.S. body armor standardizing authority—recommend replacing soft body armor every five years. This isn’t because the armor suddenly fails on day 1,826. It’s because over time, materials naturally break down due to:
Moisture and sweat
UV exposure
Temperature changes
Wear and tear from daily use
Even if your vest hasn’t seen action, aging materials can lose their structural integrity. However, with Civillian you get a 7 year warranty, which shows our determination to quality and assurance that our product is top-of-the-line.
What About Hard Armor Plates?
Hard armor plates, made of materials like ceramic, steel, or polyethylene, generally have a longer shelf life:
Ceramic plates: 5–7 years depending on the quality and usage.
Steel plates: Can last 15–20+ years if kept in ABSOLUTE perfect condition—but they’re heavier and can be prone to edge damage or spalling without a coating.
Polyethylene plates: Around 5–7 years; these are lightweight but sensitive to heat and UV over time.
Regardless of material, exposure to impact, moisture, or mishandling can reduce effectiveness. If a plate takes a hit, even if it doesn’t shatter visibly, it should be replaced immediately.
Signs Your Body Armor Needs Replacement
Don't just rely on a calendar. Here are some red flags:
Visible wear or fraying fabric
Delamination or bubbling in armor layers
Loss of flexibility in soft armor
Any sharp impacts or ballistic events
Water damage or mold

Can You Extend the Lifespan?
You can’t stop time, but you can extend your armor’s effectiveness by treating it well:
Store it flat (or hang properly) in a cool, dry place
Keep it away from direct sunlight
Use a proper carrier that distributes weight and minimizes stress
Clean it according to the manufacturer's instructions—never soak the armor
Avoid folding or crushing it (is that too obvious?)
Conclusion: Replace It Before You Regret It
Body armor is insurance you wear. If you're depending on it to protect your life or the lives of others, you want to be 100% confident in its performance. Follow the five-year rule for soft armor, watch for wear and tear, and treat your gear with respect.
At Civilian, we design NIJ standard body armor made in the U.S. with top-tier materials and strict attention to quality control. Our warranty lasts 7 years.
